Speed, strength and sustainability - three compelling reasons why cross laminated timber (CLT) is becoming the structural system of choice to deliver educational development programmes throughout the UK.
CLT is now extensively used across the commercial, leisure and education construction sectors and the benefits have been widely acknowledged, but the technology has not been prolifically used in residential developments in the UK, until now.
One of the major advantages of cross laminated timber is its inherent fire resistance. CLT can be designed to accommodate substantial fire resistance and unlike steel, remains structurally stable when subjected to high temperatures. Cross laminated timber panels can be designed to all fire resistances but most commonly 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Good practice guidance for precautionary measures against fire in construction can be found in the 16 Steps for Fire Safety produced by the Structural Timber Association – this assists with the requirement of HSG 168 – Fire safety in construction.
Binderholz is only one of two CLT manufactures referenced in the guide. The STA, supported by Binderholz, have derived an approach to the risk mitigation for a category of building construction, explicitly CLT. The Binderholz products have been tested by BRE and witnessed by HSE. The results of the tests have informed and provided data from which the STA have derived a calculation approach which has been peer reviewed. The tables in this guidance are those generated by the STA calculation process.
